WORLD UNIVERSITY CHAMPIONSHIPS-SUNDAY, JULY 9, 2006

Day 7

THE US AND GERMAN TEAMS TAKE ONE LAST PICTURE BEFORE EVERYONE DEPARTS TO THEIR HOMES.

We woke up late today and went to a rec area in Maribor where they had large swimming pools, 3 beach volleyball courts, and of course, a ping-pong table in the shade.  There were hundreds of people there enjoying the sun of Maribor.  Some of us went into the swimming pool, some of us played beach volleyball, and some of us did both or neither.  The women's singles final at the tournament venue was between Nadine Bollmeier of Germany and Yu Jingwei of China.  Bollmeier was a surprise finalist as she beat the top seed from Taiwan, Huang Yi-Hua, the fourth seed from Japan, Midori Ito, and another Japanese player 3-0 en route to the final.  However, she was overmatched in the final and lost 4-0.

NADINE BOLLMEIER OF GERMANY STORMED THROUGH THE WOMEN'S SINGLES EVENT BUT WAS OVERMATCHED IN THE FINAL.

The men's final was between Hou Yingchao who is on the first Chinese National Team and Wang Zhen who is on the second Chinese National Team.  Both players had huge forehands and extremely heavy and varied chops.  Unfortunately, both players did not fight as hard as if two players from other countries took part but still produced some highlight points.  Hou Yingchao ended up winning 4-2.

When we went to dinner, the Italians and French players were there.  The Italians suddenly started banging their utensils on the table and started chanting.  As soon as they were done, the French team followed with their own utensil-banging and a chant of their own.  They were getting ready for the World Cup final which was to be played in another hour.  The Italians ended up winning on penalty kicks which caused the Italian players to break out in cheers and left the French team disappointed.  We did some more socializing and went to a disco and packed our bags as we leave tomorrow.  This trip was enjoyable and something the players would like to be a part of again.
